Skin Trade is a 2014 action thriller film directed by Ekachai Uekrongtham, and starring Dolph Lundgren, Tony Jaa, Michael Jai White, and Ron Perlman. The film was written by Lundgren, Steven Elder, and Gabriel Dowrick.[6] John Hyams (son of directorPeter Hyams) performed uncredited script revisions.[7] The film follows New Jersey police detective Nick Cassidy, as he travels to Thailand to kill Viktor Dragovic; the man responsible for murdering his family. His second motive is to destroy Dragovic's entire human trafficking network.
Development started in 2007, after Lundgren read news about a group of girls being smuggled into the United States from Mexico. The girls were left in a vehicle along the border, and all thirty of them succumbed to heat stroke and suffocation.[8] The film was produced on a $9 million budget,[4] and was shot over a period of 50 days; in Canada and Thailand.[9][10] It was the first film to be shot in English by an organization based in Asia (outside of Hong Kong) for an international theatrical release.[10]
The film premiered at the American Film Market on November 7, 2014.[11] It was later given a limited theatrical release, starting on April 9, 2015 in the United Arab Emirates.[3] This was followed by limited releases in Thailand (on April, 23), Malaysia (on April, 30), and the United States (on May 8, 2015), respectively.[3] The film received mostly negative reviews;[12][13] particular criticism was aimed at Jaa's English, which reportedly lacked fluency;[14][15] and at the film's focus on human trafficking, which - according to some critics - wasn't enough.[14][16] Skin Trade grossed $384,026 at the worldwide box office.[3] On April 23, 2015, the film was released through Video-on-Demand.[17] On August 25, 2015, Magnet Releasing distributed the film on Blu-ray and DVD.[18][19]
